ADDRESSING YOUR SCHOOL COMMUNITY IN THE AFTERMATH OF TRAGEDY

Updated: Oct 29, 2023

After a school shooting or other tragedy involving schools or children, it is critical to provide your school community reassurance of their children's safety, regardless of whether or not the event occurred in close proximity or in another region or state. It's important to communicate as soon as possible, ensuring first that you have an accurate and confirmed account of what occurred.

Among the components of a statement, first and foremost, honestly express your sympathy and compassion for the loss of life. Second, reassure your students, families, and staff how safe your schools are and how strictly they adhere to security practices and protocols to maintain that safe environment. Include any emergency plans for the immediate future. The final component include plans to support students who are processing the incident.
